Sunday Afternoon Ride

Brad and I got out for a few hours to lay down some kms at the BHP. It was a nice afternoon to get out...if it was still February. There's still lots of snow in the park to go with the windchill. Fortunately the loop was clear, so it was a good ride depite winter's stubbornness to abate.

I also had the opportunity to accompany Brad on his maiden voyage with his new Crosscheck. It's a pretty sweet ride. I want one. Wifey said no.

I drove through the park today at 5:30. The main loop is almost all dry pavement. Let the spring training resume.

Grass Track Races and The WhitesHELL Enduro

Check out today's FGBC post regarding a few upcoming events. First, there's the Grass Track series and then there's the WhitesHELL Enduro. Both should be fun—I'll even delay my usual early Friday afternoon departure for the cottage to participate in a few of those grass track races. (I'll just have to come up with a satisfactory excuse to explain my late arrival to the awaiting family...I should be able to come up with something by then.)

RRR boys and girls: your participation in these events counts goes towards RRR's points total in our increasingly heated rivalry with FGBC. Perhaps Mike and Darryl can settle their differences on two wheels.

So, my brother in-law Kyle got to go to the handmade bike show in Indianapolis a few weeks back. I was invited to go too, and wanted to, but I have many children so I didn't get to go. However, I did steal some of his photos from his flickr account.
He is a great photographer (and pretty good on the bike too), and I do really like fixed and single speed bikes. I'm trying to redeem myself for the fixie video outrages lately. Sorry to Darryl especially because he seems to be receiving the brunt of this rage.

7 degrees of fixie

Fixie trix again. One of my favorite cycling movies (from the 80"s of course) highlighted some fine fix gear tricks. Kevin Bacon rocks by the way, and the guys in this little clip make these modern day fixie riders look like preschoolers in diapers. Oh yeah, and did I mention that this was from 1986- I was just getting my drivers license (so I'm no longer cool). Enjoy.

Forget Fixed-Buy BMX

In response to darryls"nice video" on the FGBC Blog, I'm putting up this "nice video". When will the Fixie folks realize they're trying to re-invent the wheel. I get seriously irritated (like having poison ivy on your ass), when I see these fixed gear video's. Don't get me wrong. I like a lot of people who ride fixies (Dr. H included). This isn't a slam on the good folks who ride them, just those who think it's cool to be uncool to be cool being uncool with all the hype. (Makes me a big fan of the Bike snob). So, for your enjoyment, a real video of some nice bicycle work.

Armstrong Crashes Out of Castilla y León

This is unfortunate on many fronts—mostly because we won't see him and Contador duke it out in the Giro for Astana's captaincy. Hopefully LA's injuries aren't as bad as first suspected.

I guess that's what happens when Trek equips LA with "girly bike*" geometry.

* A reference to LA's comments in It's Not All About The Bike (or was it Lance Armstrong's War?) regarding compact geometry framesets.

It's confirmed..."Armstrong suffered a fracture of the third medio of the right clavicle," the race organization said in a statement after the rider underwent an X-ray at a hospital in the city of Valladolid."

Armstrong told reporters his participation in the Giro d'Italia in May "will be very complicated".

The Big Red Dot and Other Observations

This photo sums up RRR to me (or maybe it sums up my participation in RRR). Riding? -Yes but always something slightly askew.

I never know where to find the deep, philosophic, behind-the-scenes information about RRR. Blog or email? In a semi-private email someone pointed out that the red dot on the team photo is far bigger than it needs to be. For clarification the false modesty pose was done as a joke, although my participation is idiotic since I'm wearing baggy shorts. Where else would I keep my Slurpee toonie? Why wasn't KK participating? Was he already scheming up the RRR blog and anticipating worldwide exposure?

51-year-old Duguay Signs 2-game EPHL Contract

Ah, memories. This story makes me wistful for the days of hockey past when guys like Duguay, Clark, and my childhood hero Lafleur could be men and their hair was their helmet.

I think I'll break out the old Pace Setter team pants on 21st and 22nd to mark Duguay's sure-to-be-exciting return to professional hockey.

More on the new jersey front

Funny how things happen...I've been going to the Velonews website for how long? A long time, but had never noticed the site ad for V-Gear. They do custom kits and their pricing appears to be even less than Champ-sys.

Here's their policy on minimums; it's the last part that I especially like. "We ask for 10 of the same item (in any combination of sizes) to place an order and then you may order as little as 1 of anything we produce."

Now I can get the winter jacket I need, and Mike can finally get himself a skinsuit, even if the rest of us don't feel the urge. Arm and knee warmers, socks, vests, caps...oh, the possibilities!

New Jerseys From New York?

Here's the latest...

I've tracked down a couple local suppliers that I'll try to follow up with next week to find out about pricing and minimums.

However, I came across these guys that offer 10 unit minimums at the best prices I've seen yet—jerseys are roughly 1/2 the price of other custom suppliers and bib shorts about $25-30 less. I'd be surprised if the local options can match these minimums and prices, but we'll see.

Vector image files only, so I won't get away with using MS Paint this time. I have CS3 but don't really know how to use it very well. Anyone out there with some Photoshop expertise?

Cycling Goals For 2009

Following the 50km ride in Brad's honour a few weeks ago, I took some time to reflect on what I would like to accomplish this upcoming season. In fear of disappointment, I've set goals that are realistic and achievable with just the slightest hint of challange.

The following 30 seconds or so sum it up in a nice little package.

Pretty neat...after constantly fine-tuning the front der while riding the trainer last night (grrrr!), I think I can handle some performance enhancing upgrades. After all, if it's good enough for Hincapie and DZ, then it's good enough for me!

Alas, I'll more likely settle for Larry's cast-offs after this video twists his rubber arm. (assuming he can tolerate the added bulk of the 68 gram battery)

Missing Link

Anyone seen this guy lately. Wonder if he still rides bike? (if you look closely, you'll see he's breaking into the bacon mints...and quite pleased with his prize. Maybe this photo should be on the front of the new jersey- or at least a sponsorship from the bacon mint company.)

New Team Jerseys

So, who's in charge of getting RRR new jerseys this year??? Might I suggest that a full kit be created, possibly based on the pic on the right...

Couldn't you just see it? The back of the jersey could have a tastefully rendered RRR logo reminiscent of the original Anaheim Mighty Ducks logo.
